How does Duplicount confirm a file is an exact duplicate?
Not just by name or size. Duplicount computes a full SHA-256 fingerprint of each candidate file's content, and only classifies it as an exact duplicate when the fingerprint matches another file exactly.
Does moving a file to quarantine delete it?
No. Quarantine moves selected files to a dedicated, reversible location. Nothing is permanently deleted until you explicitly confirm deletion.
What's the difference between quarantine and permanent deletion?
Quarantine is a safety step: files stay recoverable. Permanent deletion is a separate, irreversible action, requested on its own, that actually reclaims the corresponding disk space.
Does quarantining a file free up disk space?
Usually not, if the quarantine sits on the same volume as the original file — it's a move, not a deletion. Duplicount states this clearly in each operation's summary rather than implying a space gain that hasn't happened.
Which macOS versions are supported?
macOS 13.0 or later.
Does Duplicount work on external drives?
Yes. Duplicount can scan any disk or folder you grant it access to, including external drives, as long as the file system is readable (and writable for quarantine and organization operations).
An operation failed or was interrupted — what now?
Duplicount keeps a recovery journal for quarantine and organization operations. The next time you launch it on the same folder, it automatically detects any interrupted operation and tells you before allowing a new action.
